(A Brief Biographical Sketch)

Oleksandr S. BakaiOleksandr Stepanovych Bakai - Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Active Member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
nProfessor Oleksandr Bakai was born in Kharkiv on September 16, 1938. In 1955 he finished Petrivsko-Romenska middle school (now it is Gadyach district in Poltava region). He got higher education in Kharkiv State University and graduated from the faculty of Physics and Mathematics with a specialty “physicist” (1956-61). He defended a Ph. D. thesis “The influence of periodical and random disturbances on the nonlinear systems” in 1966 and a doctoral thesis “The problems of theory of nonlinear oscillations and their applications in physics” in 1972.

Oleksandr Bakai has worked at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology since 1961. He has been a junior researcher (since 1961), researcher (since 1963), senior researcher (since 1969), head of a laboratory (since 1976), head of a theoretical department (since 1981). At the same time he was a professor at the Kharkov State University (as a second employment) from 1977 to 1999 and a professor of the Belgorod Educational University (as a second employment) during 1994-1998. The scientific directions are theoretical and mathematical physics.

He developed a theory of nonlinear multiwave phenomena in continuums – plasma, ionosphere plasma, solids; constructed a theory of moderate turbulence in plasma; formulated the polycluster model of amorphous solids and researched the physical properties of polyclusters; established the connection between adiabatic invariants and Poincare-Cartan invariants; proved that the entropy of the stochastic dynamic system is an adiabatic invariant. He developed the theory of heterophase states and secondary phases, developed the theory of phase transitions considering the multiplicity of the short-range ordering, studied the nature of the large-scale correlations and ultra-slow modes in glass-forming liquids. He constructed the structure-phase diagrams of binary alloys that are under reactor irradiation; he manages the programs of design and testing in experiments with imitating irradiation of materials for the IV generation of reactors.

Professor Bakai is the Active member of the T. G. Shevchenko Scientific society (2007), Active member of the National academy of sciences of Ukraine (2009). He is the Doctor of Physics and Mathematics (1972), professor (1987). He awarded a medal “For valorous work. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of V. I. Lenin” (1970), a medal “For work valour” (1981), a medal “Veteran of work” (1987). His works on the theory of polycluster amorphous solids were won the State award of Ukraine (1992). He is the Soros professor (1996), laureate of the K. D. Sinelnikov stipend (2003). He received the commendation of the Cabinet Council of Ukraine (2003). His works on the nuclear power engineering were awarded with the O. I. Leipunsky prize of National academy of sciences of Ukraine (2008). He received the award of the NAS of Ukraine “For the scientific achievements” (2008).

He is the Member of the Committee of the State awards of Ukraine, the Member of specialized and problem councils, the Member of editorial boards of many scientific journals. Among the students of Prof. Bakai are 13 Ph.D.s and 5 Doctors of sciences. He is the author of nearly 300 scientific publications and 5 monographs.
